THE BEASTIE BOYS
BEASTIE BOYS
I was born in the wrong time period. I often think that when I hear music that I wasn’t old enough to appreciate as it was first being made. Fortunately for me the Beastie Boys music is felt no matter when you were born. Maybe it’s my personality type, but I love hearing music that constantly changes within a song. Music that you can’t guess where it’s going, or what it’s about to sound like. Growing up with a small community of people who were into Bboying ( breakdancing) really exposed me to some Beastie Boys music. When songs like Ch-Check It Out, Egg Man, and Root Down come through the speakers you can’t just sit and listen, some part of you will definitely start moving to that beat. There is so much going on in these songs, but it all comes together to generate this awesome sound. While doing music that makes people dance they also move over to songs like Sabotage and Fight for Your Right which if I owned a motorcycle I would be blasting these while riding everyday. The ability for artists to really change their sound is a difficult thing to do in our world. Not just because of the artist themselves, but because an audience gets so attached to one sound that they don’t want to hear something completely different. Music creators get stuck in the bubble of success.I can’t blame them for not trying different things, but I just feel a little bad thinking of what sound someone could put out there that may be discredited just because it’s not their usual thing. The Beastie Boys seemingly do not care, and make music with all different sounds and instruments. This is why I love their music, and why I think other people know who they are. Constantly pushing at the edges of what kind of music can be made is something music needs more of, and this group was doing it 30 years ago.
